Hornets have quickly learned Fantasia is fantastic

When Fantasia Hilliard walked into the gym at Sacramento State for the first time last summer, the women’s basketball team knew it had its starting point guard. Hilliard, despite being a 5-foot-3, baby-faced freshman, impressed her new teammates so much during her first workout that it was obvious she would be the present and future on-court leader. The Sacramento High School graduate was immediately given the starting point guard assignment, and she has not disappointed. Hilliard makes mistakes like any other freshman, but her overall play gives Sac State coach Jamie Craighead the confidence to stick with her through thick and thin. Being the only true point guard on the roster, Hilliard won the starting job without much competition. Yet, she earned it. “I expected her to come in and start,” Craighead said. “That was the only option. But she’s definitely embraced the role. At times, she looks much older than a freshman. At times, she shows through as a freshman. Obviously, I have confidence in her or I wouldn’t leave her in the game when it matters most.” Hilliard is averaging 9.0 points, 4.6 assists and 2.1 steals per game. She scored a career-high 21 points in an 88-79 loss to Montana on Jan. 21. The Hornets snapped a five-game losing streak by beating Weber State 83-68 Thursday for their first road win of the season. Sophomore guard Alle Moreno led the way with 26 points. Her eight three-pointers were the most ever by a Hornet in a Big Sky Conference game. Sac State (8-13, 3-5 Big Sky) visits Northern Arizona (6-14, 1-7) today at 5:35 p.m. Not only has Hilliard earned the confidence of her coach, but her teammates were even more impressed with her during the team’s first workout last summer. It didn’t take senior forward Emily [...]

Outage goes as planned – this time

GROVE CITY — The third time was the charm as a scheduled power outage in Grove City went as planned Sunday. “Things went very well,” said Vance Oakes, borough manager. “We started shutdown around 5:20 (a.m.), and in two hours the power was restored.” The borough had planned the outage for 5 to 7 a.m.; however, its engineers and Penn Power’s engineers consulted at the Park Street substation about taking extra precautions in turning off the power. The borough had the power outage to plug in a new transformer to another transformer already on site. The new transformer replaced the borough’s third, oldest one. On Dec. 11, the borough had an outage to unplug wiring from old transformer into its second one to prepare for the delivery of the new machine made for Grove City by General Electric. That planned half-hour outage lasted nearly three hours, due to an unforeseen malfunction of a switch at the substation that turned off the borough’s power. Penn Power was called in to deactivate the switch from its power source behind the substation, so the borough could manually close the switch to restore power to residents. A second outage was planned Dec. 18 to split wiring between the new transformer and second one. However, General Electric spent that weekend welding the new transformer, which had a small leak. Sunday’s outage was scheduled to finish the plugin. Workers took the opportunity to clean and adjust some different switches at the substation as well, Oakes added. The malfunctioned switch is expected to be replaced by spring or summer, he noted. The borough is now receiving power from both transformers, at 4,160 volts. However, it has been replacing its electrical wiring and utility pole transformers little by little for the past two years in town, which it [...]

Report: Columbus To Host 2013 NHL All-Star Game

The Columbus Dispatch reported on Friday night that the Blue Jackets will host next year’s National Hockey League All-Star Game in Nationwide Arena. Two sources told the newspaper on Friday night that officials from the Blue Jackets and the Columbus Sports Commission are in Ottawa, Ont., for a Saturday announcement.  One source said that the team was informed on Friday by the league that they would be the host city next season. Ottawa is the host city for this year’s All-Star game, scheduled for Sunday. Club president Mike Priest, general manager Scott Howson responded to messages left by the Dispatch on Friday night.  Blue Jackets spokesman Todd Sharrock said that the club would not comment. According to the newspaper, the Blue Jackets applied to host the game in 2013, 2014 or 2015. The game is considered one of the NHL’s marquee events and would possibly be one of the most significant events ever hosted in the city. Michigan’s Trey Burke eager for trip home to Columbus

Sunday will be a weird homecoming for Michigan freshman Trey Burke. The Wolverines travel to Columbus to face No. 4 Ohio State in a Big Ten showdown for first place in the conference and Burke, a Columbus native, gets his first shot at the Buckeyes. It’s a tall order for No. 20 Michigan, which has lost five straight to Ohio State and has won just twice in the last 16 meetings. The Wolverines’ last win at Columbus was Jan. 15, 2003, when most of the current roster was in elementary school. But Burke, who was anointed the starting point guard in his first season after Darius Morris’ abrupt departure to the NBA last season, has fit well into Michigan’s lineup, averaging 14.1 points and 5.0 assists. He sees the matchup as an opportunity for the Wolverines to get a statement win and downplays the one-on-one matchups against former high school teammate Jared Sullinger and guard Aaron Craft, who has become one of the best guards in the conference. “It’s a game I’m definitely looking forward to — we’re tied for first at the top of the conference so it would definitely be a big win,” Burke said on a conference call this week. Although they’ve been friends since fourth grade, it’s the first time that Burke will get to face Sullinger. Burke estimates they played together “probably over a thousand times” as teammates at Northland High School and in the summer AAU season. “It definitely won’t be weird; it’s going to be great playing against him. He going to want to win so bad and I’m going to want to win so bad,” Burke said. “It’s not a one-on-one thing — I’m not going to go into it thinking it’s me against Craft or me against Jared.” Burke knows the [...]

Five Robberies in the Hilliard Area

Five Robberies in the Hilliard Area Five robberies, two of them just hours apart and a block away, occurred over the course of one week in the Hilliard area. Keller-Williams Realtors on Fishinger and Leap Roads was robbed Thursday night.  “The minute they mentioned a gun, then I’m really scared,” Broker Helen McClaski said.      Her co-worker was held up at gunpoint. “We think we’re really safe in the middle of Hilliard, on a busy street. But it obviously didn’t protect us too much,” McClaski said. Her business isn’t alone. Two nearby Subways, a PNC Bank, and Starliner Diner have been robbed over the last week. In most of the cases the suspect was a masked man, dressed in all black, who pulled a gun and robbed workers as the businesses were closing. Police are urging businesses to step up security. McClaskie says she’s going to follow the advice. “We’re going to be much more careful. If someone is here late, someone leaves with them. We can always call police to get an escort to our cars, and we’re going to add some extra lighting to our back parking lot,” she said.  Police are stepping up patrols, and offering a thousand dollars to anyone with information that leads to an arrest. ————————————– Reporter: Terri SullivanWeb Producer: Ken HinesFive Robberies in the Hilliard Area Posted: Friday, January 27 2012, 07:52 PM EST Article source: http://www.abc6onyourside.com/shared/newsroom/top_stories/videos/wsyx_vid_15897.shtml

Dibilio and Hilliard are in Sports Illustrated this week; plus the Friday …

January 27, 2012 Dibilio and Hilliard are in Sports Illustrated this week; plus the Friday night picks Total People in Discussion: 0 One of my favorite columns from the last year was the one I wrote before the Lehigh Valley Conference boys basketball game title game between Liberty and Nazareth. It was about the No. 32s for each side — the Hurricanes’ Darrun Hilliard and the Blue Eagles’ Chuck Dibilio. Both may have worn No. 32, but deserved to be considered No. 1 in the hearts of fans of both schools. Well, this week’s Sports Illustrated has photos of both Dibilio and Hilliard. But I am sure it’s now how they really want to make the world’s most famous sports weekly. Dibilio was on page 14 in the “For the Record” where details were provided about the stroke he suffered last week while studing on the Princeton campus. Hilliard, meanwhile, is pictured on page 52 where (No. 4 for Villanova) is seen trying to stop Seton Hall’s Herb Pope on a drive to the basket. The story on Pope, who played at Aliquippa, is very good, by the way. Hopefully, one day, Hilliard and Dibilio will be featured in major stories in SI — Dibilio for making a fantastic comeback at Princeton and Hilliard for being one of the best players in the Big East. I’d love to see it. Now on to Friday night’s high school boys basketball picks: LEHIGH VALLEY CONFERENCE Parkland 61, Allen 57 — This is where I’m ahead and the two localcable companies will have live coverage. The Trojans are coming off a close call against Pleasant Valley and may be looking ahead to Scranton on Sunday, but their defense will be the difference against a Canaries team that needs to finish strong just to make districts. Emmaus 73, Becahi 50 — Green Hornets [...]

Man Arrested For Allegedly Stealing Bread Rack

Grove City police said Friday that they arrested a man in connection with the theft of $3,000 worth of bread racks from behind the Giant Eagle store on Stringtown Road. According to investigators, a Schwebel’s employee came to the store to pick up the racks and reported that they were missing. That employee gave police a license plate number of a person he suspected was the alleged thief. Police told 10TV news that surveillance video also showed the man taking the racks and leaving the store in a red pick-up truck. Police said they found the man quickly. Frito-Lay also reported some of its racks were stolen from the same Giant Eagle. Grove City police said that the description of the person involved in that case matched description of the person arrested. The name of the man arrested was not immediately released. Amylin, Alkermes Win FDA Approval of Once-Weekly Diabetes Drug

Luke Timmerman1/27/12Leave a CommentFollow @ldtimmerman [Updated: 3:47 pm] Amylin Pharmaceuticals and Alkermes have gone to the FDA twice before to seek approval of their new diabetes drug, and been turned back, but now the persistence has paid off. The FDA has cleared their once-weekly injectable diabetes drug for sale in the U.S. San Diego-based Amylin (NASDAQ: AMLN) and Dublin- and Waltham, MA-based Alkermes (NASDAQ: ALKS) today won clearance to start selling exenatide once-weekly (Bydureon) in the U.S., according to a letter posted on the FDA website. The approval came after the agency held up the application twice before—first in March 2010, and again in October 2010, saying it needed further assurance that the drug doesn’t cause an irregular heart rhythm known as QT prolongation. The companies expressed confidence back in July that the issue had been resolved, based on results of an additional clinical trial. The drug won approval in Europe back in June. [Updated with added detail on Alkermes royalty] The long-awaited U.S. approval is vital to future of Amylin, as it started investing back in 2005 in a $500 million Ohio factory to mass-produce the new drug. Amylin’s fortunes have become even more tied to Bydureon since November, when longtime partner Eli Lilly bowed out of a collaboration to co-market the drug. Alkermes, which provided technology that made the drug last long enough in the bloodstream to turn it into a once-weekly injection, will pick up an 8 percent royalty on sales of the first 40 million units sold in a single year, and a 5.5 percent royalty once sales exceed 40 million units in a single calendar year. While there is competition from Novo Nordisk’s liraglutide (Victoza) as a once-daily injection for diabetes, and various other oral pills and injectable insulin, the new drug from Amylin and Alkermes is the first treatment that can be injected as little [...]

Columbus High evacuated due to bomb threat

Carmen K. Sisson (contact)January 27, 2012 4:04:00 PM Students and faculty were evacuated from Columbus High School this afternoon following a bomb threat, but as of 3:30 p.m., police and bomb-sniffing dogs had found no device on campus. Capt. Fred Shelton of the Columbus Police Department said a call was placed to 911 at 1:17 p.m. stating there was a bomb inside the high school. He did not state whether the caller is believed to be a juvenile or the location from which the call originated. School was dismissed early, and students were allowed to ride the bus home or be picked up by parents, said Janet Lewis, public information officer for the Columbus Municipal School District. The Columbus Police Department, Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office and Columbus Fire Department responded. Bomb-sniffing dogs were brought in from Columbus Air Force Base, and Shelton said they were also awaiting a canine unit from Mississippi Highway Patrol. New Hope High School was evacuated due to a bomb threat two weeks ago, and a toolbox with an attached note was discovered on the premises, but no bomb was found. In September, Lowndes County sheriff’s deputies, in conjunction with U.S. Marshals, arrested three juveniles in connection with bomb threats against New Hope High School and Columbus Middle School. Two of the juveniles were 15, and one was 14, Chief Deputy Greg Wright said. Shelton said even if today’s threat is ruled a prank, the caller could still face legal ramifications. Calling in a bomb threat is a felony — even if there is no bomb, he said. According to Wright, the penalty for false reporting of placing explosives carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in the Mississippi Department of Corrections and a $10,000 fine. Firefighters from the Columbus Fire Department stood in the parking lot [...]

Columbus Casino Developers: Safety No. 1 Priority

Developers of the new Hollywood Casino on the west side said on Friday that the collapses at both the Cleveland and Cincinnati casino construction sites were “nothing more than a coincidence.”   Representatives of developer Penn National said that safety is the company’s No. 1 priority, 10TV’s Josh Poland reported.   “It’s a very big deal to Penn National as the developer and a very big deal to our contractors,” Penn National spokesman Bob Tenenbaum said. “A casino construction project is not any different from a hotel construction project, a factory construction project.”   Tenenbaum said that the construction incidents in Ohio occurred as workers were pouring concrete.   The Cleveland incident happened on Dec. 16, and the Cincinnati collapse occurred on Friday.   Construction crews already have completed that step for the Columbus casino, meaning they were past the risk of a similar collapse, Poland reported.   The Hollywood Casino does not have a completion date, but Tenenbaum said that they hope to open by fall.   Penn National said that its focus was on doing the job correctly.   “We set target opening dates based on the length of time required to do the construction correctly,” Tenenbaum said.   The majority of work left to be done at the casino includes landscaping, paving and interior work, Poland reported. Watch 10TV News and refresh 10TV.com for more information.     Article source: http://www.10tv.com/content/stories/2012/01/27/columbus-casino-developers-say-safety-is-no-1-priority.html

City Council selects Lahanas as city manager

Interim City Manager George Lahanas now will take on the role permanently Tweet <!– (function() { var s = document.getElementsByTagName(‘script’)[0], rdb = document.createElement(‘script’); rdb.type = ‘text/javascript’; rdb.async = true; rdb.src = document.location.protocol + ‘//www.readability.com/embed.js’; s.parentNode.insertBefore(rdb, s); })(); –> Editor’s note: This story was altered to accurately reflect councilmember Nathan Triplett’s stance on candidate Brian Murphy. The East Lansing City Council unanimously selected current Interim City Manager George Lahanas as its next permanent city manger on Friday morning after more than three hours of back-and-forth discussion. Lahanas has served in the interim role since October 2011, when former city manager Ted Staton stepped down to become the city manager in Upper Arlington, Ohio. Lahanas now will be responsible for, among other things, upholding policies Staton worked to implement, including ones that affect some MSU students, such as the city’s party litter ordinance. Lahanas also will continue to work toward implementing the city’s budget for this upcoming fiscal year, a process that will start in February. “I’ve greatly appreciated the past 13 years of service and I’m greatly honored by the trust and confidence (the council has placed in me),” he said. “I look forward to the service.” Throughout the meeting, council members recommended specific finalists for further discussion and also outlined their personal views on the criteria they used to make their recommendations, divulging their views related to the candidates’ leadership, financial management and other factors. Lahanas and Plainfield, Ill. Village Administrator Brian Murphy ultimately were the two finalists council discussed following the elimination of the other candidates. Each candidate brought unique qualities to the table, Councilmember Don Power said, but ultimately, Lahanas’ prior work in labor relations and other areas helped him rise above the rest. “When I look at the daunting tasks we have … the tough decision in [...]

UA leaders: City’s position strong, prepared for challenges

Upper Arlington has tough fiscal challenges ahead, but leaders said the city has the tools and drive to meet them. Monday, Jan. 22, marked the first State of the City address by City Manager Theodore Staton, who replaced former City Manager Virginia Barney in October. “We begin 2012 with some very serious work ahead of us,” Staton said. “We also begin the year from a position of strength and preparedness that affords us the benefit of time to explore and find the right mix of solutions to the financial challenges ahead.” Other activities at Monday’s event focused on some of those strengths, including a community fair and the presentation of the 2011 Community Awards. But the highlight was the chance for Staton to share in insights, and his vision, for the year to come. “While other cities may have pushed the pause button … the Upper Arlington team didn’t skip a beat and ably pushed forward in its provision of services and attention to numerous issues,” Staton said. “I look forward to a productive and thoughtful year, so that come January 2013, our next report on the state of Upper Arlington will again be filled with accomplishment and success.” The State of the City also featured City Council members discussing different sections of the Master Plan. Last year, council approved recommendations from five subcommittees to make changes to the 2001 Master Plan. Each member of council discussed different components of the updated Master Plan: Council President Frank Ciotola, land use; Council Vice President Don Leach, transportation and infrastructure; Councilman John C. Adams, economy and finance; Councilwoman Debbie Johnson, housing and community services-facilities; Councilman Mike Schadek, community involvement and appearance; Councilman Erik Yassenoff, technology and sustainability; and Councilman David DeCapua, implementation of the plan. “All the components of the Master Plan [...]

Council, administration to hold retreat

By Sarah Sole ThisWeek Community Newspapers Friday January 27, 2012 12:23 PM Grove City Council and the city administration plan to work on their communication skills during a retreat on Jan. 28. Lance Decker, of LL Decker Associates of Phoenix, Ariz. will facilitate. Mayor Richard “Ike” Stage said the council has been divided for as many as six years. “It seems like there’s an expanded number of 3-2 votes, 4-1 votes,” he said. “There’s no need to have that kind of environment for the good of the city,” he said. Council president Ted Berry disagreed. “I don’t think that’s the case at all,” he said. “Ninety-nine percent of all the issues, we all agree on.” Stage said he knows of no similar retreats since about 2006, when a moderator facilitated communication between administration and council regarding town center revitalization. City administrator Phil Honsey said he worked with council clerk Tami Kelly, who worked on behalf of council president Ted Berry, to select a facilitator. “We check out the references of that facilitator and found them to be excellent,” Honsey said. Honsey said it’s important that all parties make their best efforts to communicate well, become better listeners and adequately represent the community. “A lot of organizations do this,” he said. “There’s no question that there have been lines drawn over certain issues,” Honsey said. Still a retreat focuses on moving forward. “It’s a positive exercise,” he said. Berry said he wants to draft a list of priorities that would include city parks, the downtown area, and other construction projects that the majority of council can agree on. While everyone will not completely agree, “we need to try to be on the same page,” he said. Berry stressed the importance of checks and balances. “Nobody wants a rubber stamp government,” he [...]

Grove City crews move ahead with projects, ready for weather

Crews are hard at work on several major projects in the Grove City area, including the construction of a new water tower and the Eagles-Rotary Shelter House at Fryer Park. One of the most ambitious undertakings in Grove City right now is the reconstruction of Interstate 71 at state Route 665 on the southern edge of the city. Crews are dismantling the remainder of the old bridge this week, and will continue working on the project throughout the winter. Grove City Director of Public Service Les Spring said winter storms won’t affect that project any more than they will other traffic in the Grove City area. Central Ohio has been lucky so far this season, with several 50-degree days punctuating the region’s normally frigid winter weather. But snow is sure to come at some point, and Grove City officials are prepared. The city has about 1,200 tons of salt on hand. If winter remains relatively tame, it should be more than enough to last through the remainder of the season. At the end of January last year, six inches of snow fell on Grove City in a matter of hours, and a 12-man crew laid down 280 tons of salt — 28 dump trucks full — to keep the city’s 200 miles of roadways safe and passable. Spring said how long the supply of salt lasts will be determined by what weather comes this way over the next several months. “So far, it has been mild,” he said. “But we still have February and March to go. It’s Ohio, and the weather changes every hour. The weather predictions I’ve heard call for a normal second half of the winter.” The city is well equipped to handle winter storms, with eight large trucks outfitted with plows and salting equipment. The company earned $8.5 million, or 44 cents per share, in its most recent quarter, which ended Dec. 31. A year earlier it lost $39.6 million, or $2.08 per share. Kemp flashes potential at combine

PATASKALA — The recruiting process is one big sales pitch. While college coaches must sell their team and university’s academic programs, the athlete first must get himself noticed. Watkins Memorial junior football player Brenden Kemp received his big break during the fall. Kemp was invited to the Proving Ground National Combine. He participated in the event with 300 other top juniors in Phoenix during the holiday break. The event was part of the festivities surrounding the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl. “There were a lot of superb athletes there, especially some that are way up there, so it was cool to see them,” Kemp said. The three-day event included seminars on academics and citizenship, but the highlight was the combine. Players were measured in their physical abilities and ran through a variety of drills. Kemp, measured at 5-foot-9, 197 pounds, was timed at 4.51 in the 40-yard dash, the eighth-fastest running back. He had a 29 1/4-inch vertical, and he benched 185 pounds 27 times. “We did some reaction drills, cut through cones, jumped over bags and cut a certain way,” Kemp said. “We also did a 7-on-7 against the linebackers towards the end. I can definitely improve on catching.” Kemp built on an 700-yard rushing season in 2010 by eclipsing 1,000 rushing yards during the fall for the Warriors. In his first two seasons, Kemp has a total of 31 rushing touchdowns. Recruiters, however, are looking for more than statistics. They want to see the size and speed that shows potential. In Arizona, Kemp was among the best of the best. “The first day they told us a lot of rules and NCAA regulations,” Kemp said. “They really touched on how important academics are, and of course, I already knew that. Just to be in a different area and see [...]
